Wow, that is interesting and so local...and the smelter's reputation both good and bad. I spent a summer at a kids camp near Rouyn Noranda when I was 16 and we would take the 8 to 12 year old kids out on rugged flat cruise type boat and they knew how to catch fish and each had their own knife for filleting them. We had the best moose fondue and the French people in the area were delightful. It was wild. Loved to hear of your experience. Sharon B.
I am enchanted by your distinctive take on different parts of Canada. It is unusual. You capture the ambiguity the people in RN have about the industrial setting in their town. I imagine these feelings are shared in other communities with mines, refineries and other heavy infrastructure.
I am curious. How did you communicate? English? French?
